The biggest in Europe Flower Clock, which was created on Maidan Nezalezhnosti in Kyiv just before the Independence Day, 24th August, has already lost its hands…. It had a really short life: only two days!

For all those, who is still thinking to have a ride by Funicular (funikuler) in Kyiv, Ukraine, we recommed to hurry up. On the 1st of September it will be closed. Kyivpastrans representatives say that Funicular will be closed only for its regular annual maintenance and will be reopened in a month. Specialists will check the mechanism and its details and replace parts if needed. They say it will take not more than one month, but if they find more serious problems, it might take longer.

British hotel group InterContinental opened 5-star hotel InterContinental in Kiev on 2A, Velyka Zhytomyrska Street on the 27th of August, 2009. It is is conveniently located in the very center of Kiev, with walking distance from famous Khreshchatik Street, St.Michael’s and Saint Sophia Cathedrals and just next to the Hyatt Regency Kyiv. Leon Larkin, the general manager of the Intercontinental hotel informed the journalists about the Hotel opening.

Ukraine postponed new rules of entering Ukraine for foreigners

Ukraine postponed new rules of entering Ukraine for citizens of 85 countries. The introduction of new rules of entering Ukraine, as it was reported on Wednesday, August 26 in Tiraspol by a special representative of Ukraine in Trans-Dniester Victor Kryzhanovskiy. According to these rules foreigners will be obliged to provide information on their financial state at the Ukrainian border. It could be cash or financial means on the account for about 1000 euro.

On the 23d of August, just before the Independence Day, Ukraine celebrates National Flag Day of Ukraine. Today you could see flags everywhere: on the buildings and the balconies, on the flagpoles, etc. Such a celebration in the history of nations is quite young. For example, the Day of the Swedish flag Flag is celebrated since 1983, the Day of Canada – since 1995, Mexico – 1937, in the Russian Federation, the National Flag Day has been operating since 1994, in the Republic of Belarus since 1995.

Recently I’ve got a call and later this email from my British friend, which you could read below. Seems anti-American attitude is very strong in Crimea and this is sad.
“I arrived in Feodosia on July 2009. At approximately 4am on Sunday morning, august 2009, I stopped at a small kiosk near the seafront in the centre of the city, outside the Arkadiya club, in order to buy a small bottle of still water. I asked the woman behind the counter in Russian for ”pol litre wada, bez gaza, pazhalusta”.

According to the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine, this year military vehicles will not drive through the city center like it was last year. Instead, more than twenty samples of them will be exhibited at Khreshchatik Street and Maydan Nezalezhnosti. Also, this year, some technologic innovations in defensive industry will be presented during the parade for the first time in Kyiv.
