Ivan Mazepa’s murals have been revealed to the public

A unique wall-paintings of XVIII and XIX centuries have been open to the public in St. Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv. Since 60s these paintings have been hidden under a special layer of whitewash, as they say they were too bright in comparison with more ancient frescoes. Finally, there was decided to show to visitors these hidden oil paintings. So now, at the St. Sophia Cathedral you can admire the ancient images of Ukrainian heroes, such as Martyr Macarius, St. Cyril and Methodius, the first Metropolitan of Kyiv Michael, Princess Olga and Grand Prince of Kyiv Volodymyr, who baptised Kievan Rus. All paintings are made in the Ukrainian baroque style and was funded by Hetman Ivan Mazepa, who supported the Temple.
Also, they are going to open wall paintings in western part of the Cathedral. Paintings of the Ecumenical CouncilsIt themes were partially preserved there. However, in order to cleanse them of whitewash and fix them, the funds for restoration have to be found, and that is tens of thousands hryvnia.
