Russian language is banned at schools in Ukraine

Ukrainian teachers from Russian speaking areas of Ukraine are indignant: “How are they going to control us?”

Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine adopted a resolution according to which teachers should speak only Ukrainian at schools with the teaching in Ukrainian language, even during breaks. It is obvious that the main purpose of this resolution is to eradicate Russian language at schools. Some people say that also in Kiev, where a lot of the Russian-speaking population, (there are only about eight Russian schools left in the city) many teachers and students at Ukrainian language schools speak Russian during breaks and outside of school time.

BYUT Deputy Vitaliy Kurylo endorses this initiative: “It will help children and teachers to learn the language and eliminate Surzhyk. But the Party of Regions Deputy Vadym Kolyesnychenko is outraged: “This is an attempt to split the country and destroy human rights.”

“Those were “good news” for teachers for their professional holiday – the Teachers’ Day”, says one of the Kyiv school teacher. “There’s no Ukrainian speaking child in my class. Yes, we teach in Ukrainian, but during breaks we speak Russian with children and each other. How will they control us? “.

One of Dnipropetrovs’k teachers states: “Children need to hear Ukrainian in canteens, during breaks, in the ballrooms, etc.” But another one, the teacher of the Ukrainian language, is confident: “It will not do any good, because the child will speak Russian at home. Moreover, the majority of our teachers do not speak Ukrainian, but use Surzhik!”. The teacher from Odessa says: “It is similar to Stalin’s repressions! Human can not be forced to think in some language. In order to introduce the language, you need to show its beauty, so the person would make a choice.”
